Hoeven Statement on Inauguration of President Donald Trump

Senate Confirms Defense and DHS Secretaries

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today issued the following statement in recognition of the inauguration of President Donald Trump:

“The inauguration is an occasion when we can all come together and honor our Constitution’s provision for the peaceful transfer of power. We look forward to working with the new administration to advance priorities for both North Dakota and the nation.

“These include working to create jobs, reform taxes and reduce the regulatory burden to help grow our economy. We need to get on top of our debt and deficit and build our energy economy. We will work for a farm bill that helps farmers and ranchers continue to provide our country with the highest quality, lowest cost food in the world.

“We need a health care system that provides financially feasible options and puts patients in the driver’s seat. Meanwhile, our veterans deserve the best health care and we will continue to work to improve their access to health care.

“We also need to secure our nation by supporting our military and law enforcement and ensuring they have the tools they need to defend America. Today we took the first step in these efforts by confirming General James Mattis for Secretary of Defense and General John Kelly for DHS Secretary. Both bring the right background and experience to these positions and will provide strong leadership.”

Hoeven has served as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security and is a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
