Hoeven Statement in Recognition of Vietnam Veterans Day

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement in recognition of Vietnam Veterans Day. In 2017, the senator helped pass legislation that permanently designated March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day in honor of all those who served during the Vietnam War.

“While we should always honor the sacrifices of our veterans, today in particular is set aside for remembering those who served in Vietnam,” said Hoeven. “The members of our Armed Forces continue to protect our nation and secure our freedoms every day. We can best show our gratitude by fulfilling the promises we made. That includes ensuring they receive the benefits they have earned and can access convenient and quality health care services closer to home.”

Last year, Hoeven worked to pass and the President signed into law 15 pieces of legislation to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and strengthen veteran benefits. This includes the VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks (MISSION) Act, bipartisan legislation that improves on the Veterans Choice Program (VCP) and includes key provisions from Hoeven’s legislation to increase veterans’ access to long-term care options in their home communities.

Moving forward, Hoeven’s efforts in the 116th Congress include:

  • Improving suicide prevention and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • Ensuring the smooth implementation of the VA MISSION Act.
  • Maintaining the Veterans Care Coordination Initiative at the Fargo VA.
  • Expanding flight-training programs for veterans.
