“As we commemorate the discovery of oil in North Dakota sixty years ago, we also celebrate the important role of this community and our state in the nation’s energy future. When those first speculators hit black gold in North Dakota, I’m certain they were excited by the vast potential of their discovery. Today, you’re unlocking the great energy potential in the Bakken, and making important contributions not only to our state, but also to our nation’s energy independence.

“Last year alone, our state produced over 113 million barrels of oil.  And, thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of the people in Williston—and all of you working in the Bakken—North Dakota is now the fourth largest oil producing state in the nation. We’ve passed up states like Oklahoma and Louisiana.

“While we’re making significant production strides, we’re also planning for the next sixty years in Williston. To attract new infrastructure and investments, we’ve asked the U-S Geological Survey to update their study of recoverable reserves in the Basin. We invited USGS leaders to North Dakota to hear from all of you—the people living and working here, and invested in the community’s progress. The USGS heard your case and agreed to update its survey of the Bakken to provide us with a new, more accurate estimate of recoverable oil. This estimate will attract new investments in development and infrastructure, create jobs and help to sustain economic growth throughout this region.

“Today, as we commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the discovery of oil in North Dakota and the industry’s work in our state, we celebrate the past, present and the future of this great community and its contribution to powering the nation.

“Thank you again for the opportunity to celebrate the rich energy heritage of the Williston community, and enjoy today’s energy festival!”

Tomorrow, Sept. 17, the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce will host the Williston Basin Energy Festival, a day-long community celebration of the 60th anniversary of the discovery of oil in North Dakota.
