Hoeven Outlines Success of Efforts to Restore Law & Order in Nation’s Capital
WASHINGTON – At a press conference today, Senator John Hoeven outlined the success of President Trump’s efforts to restore law and order in the nation’s capital. Hoeven and his colleagues stressed the need to support law enforcement and enforce the country’s laws, highlighting how soft-on-crime policies in Washington, D.C. resulted in the nation’s fourth highest homicide rate and one of the highest robbery rates, as well as a vehicle theft rate three times the national average. According to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Trump administration’s law enforcement surge in the district has, compared to August 2024, led to a decrease of:
- 58% in homicides.
- 40% in cases of sex abuse.
- 57% in robberies.
- 82% in car-jackings.
“People need to be safe in our capital city, whether they live here or they come for work or to visit. We have a responsibility to bring down crime, and it’s good that President Trump is taking action that has delivered real results to make sure people are safe in our nation’s capital,” said Hoeven. “Our National Guard military police, along with law enforcement from a wide range of federal agencies, are trained to do this work, and as a former governor, I know firsthand how effective our Guard members are in responding to emergencies. Their visibility and hard work are a strong deterrent to crime, and it’s long past time that we support police in enforcing our laws and keeping the public safe. It’s just common sense.”
