Hoeven Congratulates Grand Forks for Recognition as Great American Defense Community

Senator Worked to Secure Grand Forks’ Designation as a Great American Defense Community

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today joined with Grand Forks community leaders, including Mayor Michael Brown and City Commissioners Tom Falck and David Engen, at a reception to celebrate Grand Forks’ designation as a Great American Defense Community. The Association of Defense Communities hosted the event to recognize the Grand Forks community’s support of service members and their families.

In January, Hoeven wrote a letter to the Association of Defense Communities (ADC) outlining the city’s support and enthusiasm for Grand Forks Air Force Base (GFAFB) and the development of Grand Sky technology park, urging them to consider Grand Forks for this special honor. In February, Hoeven announced that Grand Forks had been selected.

“Over the years, Grand Forks has consistently demonstrated how the base and the civilian community can work together to improve the local economy and enhance quality of life for service members, their families and civilians,” Hoeven said. “The Grand Forks community provides excellent support for military families while also embracing the mission of Grand Forks Air Force Base. It was a privilege to support the community during the nomination process, and I congratulate them on their win. They have truly rewritten the book on community relations with military installations.”

“We are extremely excited about this recognition of the strong support of the Grand Forks community and all the opportunities that make this a top 10 American Defense Community,” said Mayor Brown. “We are proud to play a critical role in our country's defense system, particularly through the United States Air Force and North Dakota National Guard. This recognition results from our unmatched local, state, federal, military and private sector partnerships. It also highlights the type of warm welcome and continued support that makes military members and their families, like mine, proud to call Grand Forks home.”

The Great American Defense Communities program recognizes cities, counties or regions that are committed to supporting and honoring service members and their families. Each year, ADC will recognize up to 10 communities that have improved military family quality of life.
