Hoeven Announces Up To $3 Million in USDA Support for Red Potato Producers

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee and a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is purchasing up to $3 million of red potatoes in order to address low commodity prices due to excessive supply and the poor exchange rate with Canada.

“Our farmers are facing real difficulties due to, among other things, the strong dollar, which hurts our exports and pushes commodity prices down,” Hoeven said. “This assistance is timely, as last year’s crop is facing the end of its storage season. That means farmers will be able to make room for the new harvest, ensure these crops are put to good use and keep their operations going.”
