Sen. John Hoeven Statement on the Announcement Today That the Joint Select Committee Was Unable to Reach Agreement

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction was unable to reach agreement on a deficit reduction plan:

“The Joint Select Committee’s announcement today that it was unable to reach agreement on a deficit reduction plan does not alter the fact that our nation continues to face serious financial challenges. That is a view shared by both Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Senate, and must form the path to our way forward.

“Throughout the committee’s discussions, I have advocated for a bipartisan approach that would include reduced spending, as well as tax and entitlement reform. Last week, I and 44 other Senators, along with 100 members of the House of Representatives, called for the 12-member, bicameral joint select committee to support a comprehensive plan to reduce our deficit.

“The reality is that Congress must work together in a bipartisan way to reduce our deficit and debt, put our nation on a sound financial footing, help to restore our economy and create jobs for the American people.”
