Senator Hoeven Marks Retirement of Mayville State University President Dr. Gary Hagen

MAYVILLE, N.D. – At a retirement celebration today, Senator John Hoeven helped mark the work of Mayville State University President Dr. Gary Hagen, who is retiring after more than 40 years at the university including the last 13 as its president. Dr. Hagen announced his retirement last August and will officially leave his post in July.

“Dr. Hagen’s life work has been to serve students while promoting and helping to improve Mayville State University,” said Hoeven. “Looking back over his more than four decades of service, we see the many ways Dr. Hagen’s work has shaped the lives of many students and helped make the university what it is today. We thank him for his work and commemorate all that he has done and accomplished. We wish him well as he embarks on a new chapter in his life.”

In March, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education named Dr. Brian Van Horn as Mayville State University’s next president. Mayville State University was originally founded in 1889 as the Mayville Normal School and is one of North Dakota’s nine original state institutions. The university has a current enrollment of more than 1,100 students.
