DESCRIPTION:WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven will participate in the commissioning ceremony for the USS North Dakota\, a Virginia-class nuclear submarine named for the state and designed to meet the demands of the 21st Century. The ceremony\, which officially places the submarine in active service\, will take place on Saturday\, October 25\, beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT in Groton\, Conn.  \n      \n  \n      \nWhen he was governor\, the senator worked collaboratively to name a modern\, high-tech naval vessel for the state of North Dakota. In the summer of 2008\, he and the state’s congressional delegation visited then-Secretary of the Navy Don Winter in Washington to advance the effort. An earlier USS North Dakota\, a battleship\, was decommissioned by the Navy in 1923 and subsequently used as a “target ship.” Hearing that story\, Secretary Winter was very receptive to the idea of a new\, modern USS North Dakota\, and a few weeks after the visit the secretary made it official.  \n      \n  \n      \n“Commissioning the USS North Dakota today stands as a fitting way to pay tribute to our state’s love of country and commitment to serve and defend it\,” said Hoeven. “It is especially fitting that we commission this state-of-the-art vessel as North Dakota is about to celebrates our 125th anniversary of statehood. The USS North Dakota will officially join the world’s most elite Navy. North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2\, 1889\, when President Benjamin Harrison signed the Proclamation of Admission. South Dakota was also admitted on that day. \n      \n  \n      \nThe USS North Dakota incorporates the latest technological advancements\, including sophisticated surveillance\, reconnaissance\, special operations and anti-submarine capabilities. It has a built-in reactor plant that will fuel the submarine throughout the duration of its estimated 33-year service life expectancy.  \n      \n  \n      \nThe ceremony will stream live at www.navy.mil and will be broadcast live on several North Dakota television stations.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday morning Hoeven will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for the UND Aerospace and UAS Research\, Training and Education Building. Hoeven has worked\, both as governor and now as U.S. Senator\, with the state’s UAS community to establish and maintain North Dakota’s leadership in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technologies and to make Grand Forks a hub for UAS research\, development and commercialization. The senator worked to include an amendment into the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Reauthorization bill that directed the FAA to establish six exclusive test sites tasked with integrating UAS into the National Airspace System. Last December\, Grand Forks was selected as one of the sites.

SUMMARY:Driving Tour of Devils Lake Embankment and Pump Stations
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday morning Hoeven will lead a ground tour of the Devils Lake embankment and pump stations with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials\, the Devils Lake Joint Water Resource Board and county and city officials to inspect the progress of the nearly completed embankment project. The Senator has worked to secure total cost of more than $500 million since 2009 to address flood protection\, roads and property losses in the region. Since his tenure as governor\, Hoeven has worked to address Devils Lake flooding with a three-pronged approach: retaining water in the upper basin; mitigation of existing homes\, roads and other infrastructure and outlets on the lake to manage and control releases of water. Today’s review of the embankment marks the culmination of a long effort to protect the Devils Lake community from flooding. Hoeven pressed U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack in July to eliminate WOTUS because of the rule’s possible detrimental effects on farmers and ranchers.
