Hoeven Announces More than $400K in Federal Funding for the North Dakota Department of Corrections Division of Juvenile Services

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, who serves on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded a total of $400,124 to the North Dakota Department of Corrections Division of Juvenile Services. The funds, awarded by the DOJ’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, will be used to support the continued operation of an Attendant Care Program, which provides supervision as an alternative to detention for young people. There are currently nine Attendant Care sites throughout North Dakota, including a tribal site, and the state plans to expand these sites, particularly in rural areas. The funds will also be used to further examine and address issues that tend to push young people out of the school system and into the juvenile justice system.

“When young people violate the law, it’s important for us to get involved early in a way that will get them back on track so that they can succeed in their adult lives,” Hoeven said. “Today’s grant will support North Dakota’s efforts to intervene when young people have committed minor offenses to better help them to address challenges in their lives and pursue a more constructive path.”
