Hoeven:Support for Growing Minot AIr Force Base Crucial

Senator Meets with Air Force Commander in Charge of Minot's 91st Missile Wing

WASHINGTON– Senator John Hoeven today met with Maj. Gen. C. Donald Alston, 20th Air Force commander, to discuss recent events at Minot Air Force Base and ensure the men and women serving in Minot have the support necessary to meet their growing mission.

General Alston is responsible for the nation’s intercontinental ballistic missile force, including the 91st Missile Wing stationed at Minot Air Force Base.  Hoeven and General Alston discussed Minot’s role in the implementation of the New START Treaty.  Hoeven noted the significant growth in the mission of Minot Air Force Base, including receiving a second bomb squadron and the stand-up of the 219th Security Forces Squadron.

Hoeven, as governor, worked to partner the U.S. Air Force and the North Dakota National Guard through the 219th Security Forces Squadron, which provides the Air Force with a surge force capability during increased operational requirements.  The squadron partners North Dakota Guard members with active-duty Airmen at Minot.

“Minot Air Force Base plays a critical role in our nation’s defense and is undergoing significant expansions,” said Hoeven.  “I’m committed to working with General Alston to ensure our men and women on base have the support they need to continue meeting their mission, which is to provide nuclear deterrence and Global Strike operations.”

Hoeven and General Alston also reviewed the impact of recent flooding on daily operations at the base. Minot Air Force Base has maintained normal operations and combat-ready capabilities in spite of rising water levels.

Hoeven is a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.
