Hoeven Announces More Than $2 Million in HHS Grants to Provide Job Training, Strengthen Family Relationships

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, who serves on the U.S. Senate Appropriations and Indian Affairs Committees, today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded a total of $2,272,955 to Cankdeska Cikana Community College and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

The funds are awarded as follows:

  • Cankdeska Cikana Community College – $1,272,956 – The funds, awarded by HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, will support the college’s “Next Steps” project, which was created to make it possible for Native Americans to go to school to obtain a career in health care by providing educational support services, mentoring services and childcare assistance.
  • Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians – $999,999– The funds are made available through HHS’ Pathways to Responsible Fatherhood Program, which works to help fathers develop communication and parenting skills to improve relationships with their children while also providing job training and other employment services to improve the financial well-being of the children.

"Our young people are our next generation of leaders, and it’s important for them to have strong foundations that empower them to achieve success later in life,” Hoeven said. “Today’s grants will go towards supporting Native Americans who wish to embark on a career in the health care sector, which will help them to become financially secure and help their communities. Today’s funding will also go towards strengthening family relationships, which will help provide stability and financial security to families.”
